This Keto Chicken Pot Pie Soup recipe is easy to make, delicious, and satisfying in its own right... but my keto dumplings take it to another level!

A bowl of creamy low carb chicken pot pie soup with keto dumplings. Overlaid text says keto chicken pot pie soup.

The winter months are upon us, and with them ... Soup Season!

I’m a big fan of creamy soups, as you may have guessed from the last couple of soup recipes I posted - Creamy Keto Taco Soup and Keto Loaded Pierogi Soup.

I just find a creamy broth - loaded with a bunch of flavour! - to be the perfect comfort food for the colder months.

Today’s comforting soup is a fantastic one-pot meal with all the flavors of chicken pot pie, just in soup form!

Way more satisfying than cream of chicken soup, and less work than a classic chicken pot pie.

This hearty soup has tender chicken and a bunch of veggies in a creamy sauce.

Rather than serving warm biscuits on the side, they’re cooked up IN the soup, as dumplings.

Like I said, the ultimate comfort food... so let’s get to it!

    Nutritional Information

While this recipe is a bit higher carb than some of my recipes (18g total carbs, 6 grams fiber, 13 grams net carbs per serving), it’s still a great fit for those on a low carb diet.

Most of the carbs are coming from vegetables, and really - 13 net carbs is a much better option than falling off the wagon for the higher carb source material when a craving hits, amiright?

The best part is that there’s a whopping 45 grams of protein per serving!

It’s the best way to warm up after a winter hike or afternoon of tobogganing, IMHO.

    Ingredients

This creamy chicken pot pie soup recipe looks like it takes a lot of ingredients, but they’re all pretty simple ingredients - anything you don’t have on hand, you’ll easily be able to find in any grocery store.

The full ingredients list - with measurements - is in the recipe card at the end of this post, but I have some notes for you that don’t really fit there!

You can make this delicious soup with or without the dumplings, so lets look at those ingredients in two sections:

    Chicken Pot Pie Soup Ingredients

    Chicken

I usually use boneless skinless chicken breasts when making this healthy chicken pot pie soup, but sometimes I’ll use some boneless skinless chicken thighs - usually half and half with the boneless chicken breasts.

If you’re not wanting to mess with raw chicken, this delicious recipe works well with pre cooked chicken as well.

Using leftover chicken - or leftover turkey, when you’ve got that on hand - is a great time saver!

I’ve recently gotten into store-bought rotisserie chicken and just breaking that down to save some time and effort. Sometimes I’ll use Costco rotisserie chickens, but I prefer the ones from Fortinos.

    Chicken Broth

I’ll use either boxed chicken broth (low sodium varieties) or homemade chicken stock if I have some on hand.

I’ve even made this with a homemade vegetable broth, but I definitely don’t have that on hand as often as I do the chicken bone broth.

    Dried Savoury

I use Dried Summer Savory in a lot of my chicken comfort food recipes, roasts, soup recipes, etc.

It’s popular in East Coast Canadian cooking, and it tastes great.

It wasn’t super common when I was living down in the USA though, so I know that not everyone keeps it on hand.

You can use Italian Seasoning or Poultry Seasoning if you don’t have the summer savoury - just pick whichever flavour you’re more in the mood for!

    Everything Else

    Rounding out this, you’ll need:

    Fresh carrots
    Celery Ribs
    Turnips
    Yellow Onion
    Garlic Cloves
    Frozen Peas (optional)
    Heavy Cream
    Olive Oil
    Xanthan Gum
    Salt and Black Pepper

... I just really don’t have any notes for you, on those last few ingredients. Pretty straightforward!

    Keto Dumplings Ingredients

The keto soup dumplings also take some fairly simple ingredients. If you’ve done any of my keto baking, these will probably be standard pantry items for you:

    Super Fine Almond Flour
    Unflavoured Whey Protein Isolate
    Coconut Flour
    Unsweetened Almond Milk
    Shortening or Butter
    Dried Parsley or Summer Savory
    Baking Powder
    Xanthan Gum
    Salt

How to Make Keto Chicken Pot Pie Soup & Dumplings

The full recipe is in the printable recipe card at the end of this post, this is the visual walk through with step-by-step photos.

I recommend getting all of the ingredients chopped, measured, and generally prepared before getting started.

All of the ingredients prepared and laid out next to a big pot on a stove top.

    Keto Creamy Chicken Soup

In a large pot over medium-high heat, cook onions in olive oil until just starting to go translucent.

Add chicken breast, cook until outside browns slightly. .

Next, add celery, carrots, and garlic, cook for one minute.

6 part image showing the onions, chicken, and vegetables being cooked in steps.

Add broth and turnips, bring to a boil. Set a timer for 15 minutes.

2 part image showing the broth and turnips added to the soup pot.

Once the time is up, add the heavy cream and frozen peas (if using) to the pot. Stir well to combine.

Mix summer savoury and xanthan gum, add to the soup and mix well to combine. Add to the pot, stir well to combine, and season soup with salt, pepper, and additional savoury, to taste.

Turn heat down to lowest setting, keep warm, while making the dumplings:

    Keto Soup Dumplings

In a medium sized bowl, mix together almond flour, protein powder, coconut powder, parsley or savoury flakes, baking powder, xanthan gum, and salt.

Measure shortening/butter into the same bowl, and cut into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or fork(s). The idea is to work it in until it’s evenly distributed throughout, in very small pieces.

4 part image showing the dry ingredients for the keto soup dumplings being mixed, and the lard cut in.

Add almond milk, stir just until dough comes together. Don’t over stir or beat it.

If dough is too crumbly, add a small amount of extra milk. Dough should be slightly sticky - if it’s VERY sticky, add a small amount of protein powder.

2 part image showing the almond milk being added, and the dumpling dough being formed.

Bring soup back to a simmer.

Drop rounded tablespoons worth of dough into simmering soup.

Cover and simmer on low for 15 minutes WITHOUT LIFTING THE LID.

4 part image showing the dumpling dough being added to the pot with an ice cream scoop, and the finished dumplings simmering in the soup after cooking.

Once the time is up, lift the lid and serve your hot soup!

    Leftovers

Once cooled to almost room temperature, leftover soup can be transferred to an airtight container and stored in the fridge for 3-4 days.
